Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu died

B"H

Israel's former Sephardi Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu passed away today. He had been in hospital for ages and I dare to say that when he was really ill, it may be better for him being in Olam HaBah than facing more pain in this world.

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu used to be the spiritual leader of the National Religious Zionist Knesset Party (formerly "Mavdal"). Furthermore he stood for stricter Halachot than his counterpart, the former Sephardi Chief Rabbi and spiritual head of the SHASS party, Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef.

I met Rabbi Eliyahu a few times when he gave his speeches at the square in the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City on Chol HaMoed Sukkot and Pessach. What I liked was that he expressed his opinion no matter what.

Israel will miss him.
