Who wants the Pope in Israel ?
Only Israeli politicians considering better relations to the Vatican and the rest of the world. Does the wider Israeli population care about the Pope ? The answer is NO ! No one wants him here, especially not the Jewish religious population.
On May 12, the Pope is due to visit the Kotel (Western Wall), and as he loves to appear with his gigantic idol worship cross, the Chief Rabbi of the Kotel, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, already shows concern. For religious Jews, a cross is like a swastika, as it reminds us of more than a thousand years of pogroms, sufferings and missionizing innocent Jews.
Rabbi Rabinovitch wants the Pope not to appear with a cross at the Kotel offending the Jewish religion.
Doesn't the Pope just get it by himself ? Obviously not, as he prefers anti - Semites (see Williamson).

I think it is horrible that they are thinking of closing the Kotel and I don't know what else for an idol-worshiping nazi. We have people homeless and unemployed and they are going to spend millions of shekels--for what? Even worse--why aren't the rabbis speaking out against this! It sometimes seems like this country is ashamed of their Jewishness--big mistake!

ReplyDeleteKotel Rabbi Rabinovitch has been immensely under pressure lately. Pressure from different chassidic directions when he took over responsibility over Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai's grave. For months, posters were hanging all over Mea Shearim calling Rabinovitch a traitor and Shababnik (someone looking haredi but not behaving in this manner). Just recently, took back his authority over the grave but I don't think that he looks for more trouble. This is also why he wants to prevent the Pope from ignoring Jewish belief and is trying to prevent that he shows up with a cross. And, as the Pope doesn't think, he would definitley show up with his cross thinking the Kotel belongs to him and Christianity.
I think that Rabbi Rabinovitch is also under pressure from other rabbis although they don't openly speak out. And why should the Gerrer Rebbe, the Belzer Rebbe or Rabbi Eliyashiv openly deal with a Pope. He doesn't even exist for them. And if he shows up with a cross, just send him some stones over as a little welcoming.
According to my opinion, the Pope shouldn't even be allowed to go to the Kotel. Maybe to the site but then as someone private and not openly worshipping idols.
